The (B)Vow

Everytime i check on my humble blog, I'm ashamed of myself.

Why?

  • I don't blog enough to keep my readers around
  • When I do blog, it's either a negative post or useless fact of myself
  • Because I don't blog as much, I don't remember if i have blogged about something that I wanted to blog about
(Rachel hung her head in shame)

So it came to me, that i should write the T&C for myself, representing my blog, to myself. I shall call this, "The Bvow".

I, Rachel, vow to blog only of the positives, and to blog at least once a month, about myself and my surroundings, so that i can keep all the happy memories written down, and spread the goodness to my readers.

I shall share my life with all of you, sincerely and with an open mind, as I know, anyone may judge me, but my blog (and its readers) will stand by my side, till the day blogging is deemed uncool and Internet shuts down blogger.com.

Yours truly,
Rachel :)

Live and Inspire Series : Season II kicks off!

Tomorrow marks the launching of the second season of the Starbucks Live and Inspire series yo! I'm actually really excited for it as Ramli Ibrahim of Sutra Dance Theater will be the guest speaker and he'll be the first to get the balls rolling for new season.

"This pure, intense fire in the most sacred part of myself. It is the point of time when I celebrate life with my total being." -Ramli Ibrahim, 1989

The renowned dancer and choreographer shows that he does not need to conform as long as one has the passion and love for what he does. Being a Muslim who pioneers in both traditional Indian dances and Malay dances, I believe that he is the perfect example to prove that even when politics try to break us, races try to differentiate us, religions try to separate us, art however, unites all of us as one. For that, I salute Ramli Ibrahim and I sooo wish I could be there in person to listen to what he has to share.

If you have never seen or heard about the Live and Inspire series, watch this little clip to see what you've missed!

Venue : Starbucks Level Two, Bangsar Village II.

Mind over matter.

I've been whining and complaining bout how bored and lifeless I am for the past few hours. What I failed to realize was how blessed I am to be able to spend some alone time and do some soul-searching.  It's pretty amazing how loud your mind speaks to you when the night seems dead and quiet except for the occasional sound of cars speeding by. Now my mind is telling me to write my thoughts down, as thoughts are roots of ideas and I will not know how amazing those ideas would turned out until I pen them down.

I was doing a little research when I came across an article about how our mind can make us and break us. The power of the mind is needed to be focus and determined. However, more than often, our mind also generate a hundred excuses for us to fail. I know this seems like pretty deep stuff (and no I am not trying to be philosophical here) but it's not! To put it in a simpler way, to quote the example from the article, if I said I wanted to work out at 7am in the morning everyday, everyone would be like 'woah, no way you can wake up for it man'. There! Don't you see? You want to do something but your mind tries to break the idea, even though in this case, your friend's mind trying to suggest it to you. What we need to do is to set the idea in our mind, lock it down and throw the key away. Try to do this at home. Set a task for yourself. Something that you have been meaning to do but you just have no time for it. This time, give yourself no excuses. Whenever your mind tries to suggest you something else, brush it away. If you want to do it in the morning, wake up for it. Even though it's freaking 7 am, screw sleep! If you want it bad enough, don't let your mind win this time.

Now it's 3am in the morning but I'm going to be up at 9am to do 100 times of sit-ups. Cos I want to. It's all in the mind.

Beautiful morning innit?

I'm grateful that I woke up early today, and I get to talk to my sister before she head out to work.
I'm grateful that I had to walk a long stretch to get to the bus stop, as I am given the chance to shed some weight off.
I'm grateful that I had to wait for the bus, as I get to enjoy the beautiful view of the park in the morning, with the lalangs waving back at me.
I'm grateful that I made a blunder, for now I'm a day too early to collect my pass.
I'm grateful that the journey home in the bus felt so long, as I get to bask in the sunshine.
I'm grateful that I forgot my camera today, as I know I'll be able to capture the beautiful view I have tomorrow, and for now, the picture shall stay put in my head.
I'm grateful that I call mum just to say hi, as I miss her terribly and it's been a taboo in my family to say it out loud.
I'm grateful that the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Sumatra this morning and no casualty has been reported.

Positivity is all we need

Okay, half an hour has passed and I'm feeling better already.

All I want to say is that I'm glad a have a John C Maxwell book. I think I am an emotionally dependent person, as I've always look for someone, or in this case, something to tell me that everything's going to be fine. And I wished Adam's online so that I can bitch bout myself and sulk. However, I remind myself to stay positive, so I went and read Tim's List of 100 instead, and it perked me up a little bit. :)

Adam and Tim are two most influential people in my life right now. Ever since I got to Spore, I made a little promise to myself, that is to strive to be a better person. I want to live and breathe on positive vibes, and that's exactly what I'm getting from them. Is this just another phase in life? I honestly don't know. But I can tell you this is a good phase! :))

Read this one quote off John C Maxwell that I think I can relate to right now.
"Good people are good because they've come to wisdom through failure. We get very little wisdom from success, you know."

Live and Inspire Series : Emotional Freedom Technique

To some they think it's miracle, to others they are skeptical about it. However, Emotional Freedom Technique(EFT) is neither of the two, it is merely the combination of sciences from the East and the West.

The story :
If one watch enough Hong Kong kung-fu flicks, one would know of the existence of meridian points in the human body. Meridians are a network of energy that's interconnected in the human body, very much like wiring in the circuit board.

The ancient Chinese found out that energy flows within the body and certain meridian points control certain organs or bodily function. Chinese call it chi, Indians call it chakra, and there are many other definition for this. Acupuncture therapy were built based on just that. The difference between EFT and acupuncture is that EFT works as a healing aid that does not use needles and it involves psychotheraphy as well. What we do not know of is that disturbance in the flow of the energy in our body sometimes might be transformed into negative emotions and these unresolved emotional issues would ultimately affect our health.

Everyday we hear people around us, loved ones, friends or colleagues complaining about reoccurring health problems such as headache, stress and depression or even phobias that cannot be dealt with medication. EFT provides an alternative way of healing when everything else does not seems to work. This Thursday, Issac Lim will demonstrate the wonders of EFT by teaches us how to control the emotions that has accumulated within the years and free ourselves from the negative emotions by tapping on the meridian points.

Issac Lim is an administrator of Gracevilla Retirement Centre for the past 18 years and his role as a complementary therapist is registered with the Malaysian Ministry of Healty-TCM. He is also a member of Malaysian Society for Complementary Medicine (MSCM) and Malaysian Psychotheraphy Association. Most importantly, he is certified under the American Board of NLP practitioners and he is certified as EFT-ADV (Advance) by Master Patricia Carrington (US) and is a Level 3 under EFT Master Peter Graham in Australia.

To understand more about EFT, here's a video that sums it all.

Still skeptical? Head over to the Starbucks Bangsar Village 2 this Thurday to experience EFT yourself. Free Starbucks coffee for the first 30!

I is Chef!

I have finally found the only bright side of being unemployed. There's too much time to spare and while searching for jobs online, I googled up recipes of how to make my favourite food in the world, mashed potatoesssssss!! (ohh aren't you as excited as I am? :p )

I have many failed attempts in the kitchen before (herbal chicken soup from packet is a pack of lies, literally), thus I am always skeptical of cooking alone. Born blessed with mummy and sister dominating the kitchen, you can imagine me sitting in front of the television, shouting towards the kitchen, "MOM! Can we eat yetttttt?". Heh, I know I is spoilt.

Hereby, presenting my first cooking series, Cooking Virgins Episode 1 : Basic but Awesome Mashed Potatoes with Gravy. Please, get your pen and paper ready just in case I type too fast (eh ceh ceh lol).

Ingredients :

For the mashed potatoes you'll need
- around 6 potatoes depending on the size
- milk (I used HL fresh milk, but anything full cream would do also)
- butter
- cheese (grated cheese preferably, but those usual slice cheddar cheese would work the same)
- salt

For those who fancy gravy with their mashed
- butter
- quarter chicken stock
- flour
- leftover water from boiling the potatoes

Method :
1. Wash the potatoes, peel off their skins and diced them so that it is easier to cook and mash later.
2. Transfer the diced potatoes into the pot. Fill the pot with water until the potatoes are covered. Allow water to cover 1 inch above the potatoes.
3. Add one tablespoon of salt to the water.
4. Let them boil for around 20 minutes until tender. You can try to use fork to poke the potatoes to determine if they are soft enough to be mashed.
5. Once tender, turn off the gas and pour out around 300ml of the boiled water to a separate bowl (this is going to be used to cook the gravy).
6. Drain off the rest of the water but leave around 1 tablespoon of water in the potatoes so that when you mash them later, it would not be too dry.
7. Heat around 6 tablespoon of milk.
8. Cut the cheddar slices into smaller pieces so that they would melt among the potatoes later. (Do not be lazy, do not tear them by hand!)
9. Grate butter using fork until you've achieved around 2 table spoon of butter.
10. Mashing of potatoes! There's actually a specific tool to mash potatoes, but I used a fork instead.
11. Add in grated butter, milk (2 tablespoon at a time) and cheese bit by bit and mashed them all up.
12. Sprinkled some pepper to taste.

13. Then, you heat a small cube of butter in the pan and stir in flour (small fire please, or the pan goes black in no time).
14. Add in the left over potato water quickly. The reason I used the leftover water is because the starch from the potatoes help to thicken the gravy and add taste to it. Do not pour in all of the water. Use common sense, add in bit by bit or else the gravy would turn really watery.
15. Toss in the chicken cube and stir till the gravy thickens.

Side notes :
- I screwed up a bit on the gravy cos i put in half a cube of chicken stock, my brother in law said it was a bit too salty. Thus he diluted some corn starch in water and stir till the gravy thickened.
- I bought really small potatoes (no choice, the shop selling only small sized potatoes :S) so the portion I've made only enough to serve 3 pax.
- Heating of milk is very important. I do not know why, but it has to do with mixing hot and cold stuff at the same time. Heh. Amateur mah.

That's it, pretty easy recipe! And it taste yummeh. Pictures as evidence ;)

Got presentation somemore. Mashed in style!

On the left would be the gravy

The whole process took me around 1 and a half hour to make. Would be a lot faster if I had assistance. Such hard work, nah see one more time my awesome mashed potato!!

Now call me chef! Heeee

Live and Inspire Series : For she practically married her passion, Yoga.

"Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured."  -BKS Iyengar

Ninie Ahmad's favourite quote. Some may know her as the famed yoga instructor who got appointed to be the official yoga ambassador for Adidas Malaysia, others may know her as the witty blogger who writes about her life and about (in a way Carrie Bradshaw would in Sex and the City, if you get what I mean) when she is not on her yoga mat doing headstands.

Personally, I have only met Ninie Ahmad twice, once in Delicious Bangsar, another in a fashion magazine launch, and I could not help but to admire how the small, petite Ninie Ahmad went against all odds to beat the ban of yoga among Muslims in Malaysia and set up BeYoga, her very own yoga sanctuary for the benefits of all yoga practitioners in KL & PJ.

One may find it hard to believe that she was not at all flexible 10 years back. Being active as as an school athlete and hockey player back then, Ninie was forced to quit her games when she developed chronic asthma attacks that affected her respiratory system. Not willing to give up her lifestyle, she resolves to yoga as the answer to balance her strength and flexibility, and the rest, as we know it, is history. Now at 27 years old, she carries a pretty impressive list of achievements under her belt. She has been (all of you now, take a deep breath); practising yoga for 10 years and has been teaching yoga professionally for 8 years; published two yoga magazine, one of them "Hati Yoga" being the first Yoga magazine in Malaysia; being appointed as Yoga Ambassador for Adidas Malaysia; started her own yoga empire with BeYoga; and appeared numerously on television, talks and magazine spreads (yoga-ta check out her 8 pages spread on TATLER Malaysia). Phew, that was a mouthful.

If you want to know how she does it, meet Ninie Ahmad in person this Thursday in Bangsar Village II, Starbucks Live & Inspire Series where our yoga instructor would talk about yoga over coffee and if you are lucky, she might just decided to flex her spine and strut some interesting yoga poses. It doesn't matter if you're into yoga or not, be inspired by the talk and come for the freebies! Maybank is offering free coffee for the first 30 who register on ground and BeYoga is giving away exclusive membership for free and basically you do not have to pay a single penny to be part of the talk as it is free of charge. Now that's a lot of  'free' in one sentence!

Mark your calendar now, or (sadly, in this technology dependent world) set a reminder on your phone or lappie because for someone who eat, breathes and pray yoga, Ninie Ahmad is one hot speaker that should not be missed!

Date : 21 January 2009 (Thursday)
Time : 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The heartbreaking love story

I cannot bear not to pass on this piece of beautifully written post. I dont usually 'forward' blogpost, and I promise it wouldn't be a habit. Now please, read and pray for love and hope.

---- x ----

My name is Brandy. And I have a blog.

And a plea.

I use my blog to showcase the crazy I meet everyday, share the stories of the kids I teach and document my love for tequila, dairy products and the abdominal muscles of Ryan Reynolds. Rarely do I talk about personal issues on my blog- as personal as the dude that I adore (who I actually met through my blog- single ladies, let that be a very good reason to blog, the possibility of meeting someone as wonderful as my man), but I need your help. And it involves my dude.

He’s a guy who made math comics for my class, so they would love learning about addition. He’s the kinda guy who sends my friends gift cards when they are having hard times, who remembers every story I ever told him, who was the first person I celebrated with when I got a teaching job. He’s the guy who sent flowers to me at school- dozens of my favourite pink roses just because he loves me. He’s a guy who has spent a year patiently explaining (and re-explaining) everything there is to know about football during the important games when silence is preferred. He’s made me word puzzles and comics and stayed up late playing Scrabble with me (even though I beat him almost every time). He’s listened to me cry about school and family and jobs. He is everything I never knew I needed and everything I always knew I wanted.

The holidays have hit us hard. He’s recently been told he may have something called multiple myeloma- an incurable cancer, that gives a person an average of five years of continued life. Though this news has came as a shock, he continues to be exactly who has always been- spending his time worrying about me, rather than worrying about himself. He’s the most selfless individual I know- (he stayed late on Christmas Eve to work, so his co-workers could leave early) and a post like this would never be something that he would promote or encourage but when I’m overwhelmed and feeling helpless, the blogging community has always given me tremendous support and comfort, two things I desperately need at this time.

As I write this, the future is uncertain and we aren’t sure what’s happening. He’ll need to see an oncologist soon, to verify what’s going on in his body. My hope is that everyone who reads this think positive thoughts and if you are a person who prays, could you add him to your list? (You can refer to him as ‘brandy’s hot awesome dude’). If you don’t pray, please keep him in your heart. This cancer is only a possibility and I believe that the prayers and positive thoughts of people can make sure it never becomes a reality.

I want to give a big thank you to the blog owner who scraped their original blog plans and graciously put this up. My goal is to get as many people as possible to see and read this post. If you are reading this and want to help, copy and paste my plea into your blog or send a link through twitter, so more people can keep him in their thoughts. I would be so very grateful (even more grateful than I am to my friend who first showed me the picture of Ryan Reynolds on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. If you haven’t seen it, google it. You. Are. Welcome).

I realize this all sounds dramatic, a Lifetime movie in the making- but this is life. Right now. And I’m throwing away any hint of ego and am humbly asking for you to pray or think kind thoughts. If you are able to pass this on, thank you and if you know anything regarding MM- please email me (my email is on my blog). This isn’t a call for sympathy or a plea for pity. It’s just one girl hoping you can think positive thoughts for the person she adores. If my current heartache provides you with anything, let it be with the reminder that life is short, love is unbending and no one knows what could happen next. Maybe it is silly, but I really do believe that positive thoughts can make a huge difference. Thank you for reading this and if you haven’t already? Please tell someone you love them today.

I did.
